ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is grounded in an exploration of consumerism, appetite, desire and excess in the context of today’s capitalist society. Drawing from my culinary background, I see the ubiquity of food as a universally understood mode of communication and therefore a conceptually rich artistic medium. I am particularly interested in the social, historical, and geopolitical implications of sugar as a medium. The surface carries the weight of the sugar and functions as a metaphor for the human body in my work: a vessel burdened with appetite. My practice aims to situate consumer appetites within larger arcs of culture, history, power, emotion and memory in a non-prescriptive, dialogical context.
